THE ELELEI DANCE THEATRE COMPANY was born in 2020 from the collaboration between the artists, Sabrina Gargano (Barletta, Italy) and Rafa Jagat (Valencia), with the idea of being able to combine dance and theatre and create a single disciplinary language.
Motivated by telling stories, wondering why things happen and how they could be assimilated by the audience, they created their first work “A CIEGAS” in 2020.
The work premiered in the spring of 2021 and it has, already, won the first prize at the MAIS IMAGINARIUS Fes- tival in Portugal and the AUDIENCE AWARD at the 35th Competition International Choreographer Hannover 2021.
The duet is touring across Spain, the U.K., Portugal, Greece and Italy.
In October 2020, ELELEI started the collaboration with Fani Benages who accompanies, advises and promotes the company and its shows. In January 2021 they created the physical theatre film “MAY YOU LISTEN?” commis- sioned by the young company Jasmin Vardimon JV2 in England and premiered in May 2021. Elelei was invited again by Jasmin Vardimon to create a dance piece “MARATHON” for JV2 in January 2022. “MARATHON” toured across the U.K. to finally culminates its tour at Sadlers Wells (London) in May 2022.
Their latest work “SOY MADERA”, co-produced by the MAIS IMAGINARIUS premiered at the same festival in May 2022.
Elelei company has co-created in Austria with AKROSPHERE COMPANY their last work called “AUX”. They also collaborate as playwrights and choreographers on projects from other companies.
CONFLICT MOVEMENTS
This workshop is based on the need to create a space of imagination and consciousness in dancers when it comes to using their body to dance and create.
We differentiate two parts. The first is dedicated to “movement research”, while the last part is directed to the importance of scenic composition on a physical level.
MOVEMENT RESEARCH
We rely on what we call the “dramaturgy of movement” to convey rhythm to the dancers. We employ a series of dyna- mics in relation to this, to facilitate the understanding of our methodology.
In this section we focus merely on the form, the mere dance and its abstract aspect to delve into the most physical area of the participants.
Through the use of repetition, circularity, tiredness and play, we invite to discover new qualities and structures, to open new doors in the movement codes and to abandon the known patterns for a moment.
SCENIC COMPOSITION
In this section we combine what was taught in the first part with the creative tools, where the ques- tion emerges strongly in dance to know what we do and why we do it when it comes to telling sto- ries with our body. For this we introduce theatrical dramaturgy in the exercises.
As creative artists we are interested in trans- mitting to the participants our need to know what we do on stage to avoid loss and to make them understand that we are not just bodies that dance but also tell something beyond the content being abstract, narrative or visual.
We notice an absence in professional dance training in this regard, where technique and cop- ying teachers occupy the entire spectrum, leaving the creative entity that resides in each of the dan- cers without development options
GOALS
- Stimulate, motivate and inspire students so that they awaken their creative instinct and are not just imitators of movements.
- Convey that the world of contemporary dance is a profession and not a hobby. In our message we constantly insist on this. Take responsibilities with themselves so that this is fulfilled and thus be respected, but also respecting this wonderful art and those around
- We want attendees to take risks from start to Dare to do what they have never done before and connect with their instinct and not their judgment in order to discover the unknown about them.
- Prioritize experiential experience over expo- sure and
- Have fun
