Roberto Olivan is an international choreographer, performer, and artistic director whose work is shaped by extensive travel and a deep study of movement. His artistic approach explores the tension between the established and the insurgent, creating a personal universe where risk, intuition, and new logics challenge physical and expressive limits.
Trained at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona and P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, Olivan began his professional career with ROSAS, the influential company led by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and has worked with renowned directors such as Robert Wilson, Tom Jansen, and Josse De Pauw.
He is the founder and director of ROPA / Roberto Olivan Performing Arts, the artistic director and founder of Vertebra Dansa (formerly Deltebre Dansa) International Festival, Arteria Tortosa Festival, and L’Obrador Creation Space. His work spans choreography, performance, teaching, film, and cultural leadership worldwide, and his career has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Premi Nacional de Cultura (2014), Premi Ciutat de Barcelona (2013), Premi FAD Sebastià Gasch (2012), Premi Cultura Deltebre (2017), and international distinctions such as the Prix SACD de la Création Chorégraphique (Belgium, 2001).
(Workshop Description)
Instinct as a Source of Movement
This workshop explores instinct as a primary source of movement. Roberto Olivan approaches movement through physicality, anatomical awareness, sensitivity, and body-kinetic intelligence, inviting participants to connect internal sensations and emotions with physical action.
Working with breath, efficiency, imagery, and spatial awareness, participants develop perceptual and sensory consciousness that links mind and body, transforming the body into a vehicle for physical and emotional expression. The workshop balances technical understanding with freedom, cultivating a movement language in which instinct, speed, and precision coexist, opening space for new creative possibilities.
